Forensic enquiry is an inalienable part of the Criminal justice delivery system. The forensic scientists help the investigating agencies in detecting cases and provide opinion as expert which is relied upon in courts. Forensic Science Laboratory, Kolkata, the oldest forensic science laboratory in India, has Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology, Ballistics, Foot print, Photography, Serology and Questioned Documents sections at present.

In recent past (2019), a new division namely Crime Scene Management Division (CSMD) has been established which comprises of 9 Mobile Forensic Units (MFU) for all Police Commissionerates in the State and CID, West Bengal to work as quick response forensic units. The units are engaged in examining potential scene of crime and lifting of credible scientific evidences and provides scientific support and training to the concerned investigation officers.

The FSL, Kolkata receives and provides expert opinion in nearly 500 cases every month. Its scientific officers, SSO's, Assistant Directors and supporting scientific and ministerial staffs work tirelessly in providing competent opinion in the shortest possible time to ensure timely prosecution. Efforts are being made to modernize the laboratory and open DNA, Digital Forensics, Explosives and Narcotics Sections. There is one Regional Forensic Laboratory at Jalpaiguri with Toxicology, Serology and Biology Sections. Upgradation of the RFSL Jalpaiguri and opening of new RFSL at Durgapur are also in process. Since fighting crime effectively is contingent on providing expert forensic opinion in time, it is our endeavour to provide quality professional opinion promptly and comprehensively.
